The practice of Sufi orders in Turkey highlights the exclusionary mechanisms that are involved, calling into question the inclusiveness of Sufism as an abstraction; “Sufi tariqas [orders]… do not refrain from settling inside the communitarian borders and obtaining power from them” [sic] (p.135). As knowledge forms that stem from the Of the numerous orders of Islam, Sufism is defined as the inner and mystical dimension. The Mevlevi Order was formed in 1312 in the Turkish city of Konya (formerly the capital of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate) by the followers of the 13th century Persian poet, Islamic theologian, and Sufi mystic Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī (or Mevlânâ). Her radiant smile, soothing voice and instruction of peaceful doctrines of Sufism keep attracting an ever-increasing number of followers in Turkey. Situated at an altitude of 1016 meters in the south central region of the vast Anatolian steppe, the city of Konya is famous far beyond the borders of Turkey. The city's renown derives from the nearby ruins of Catal Huyuk and, more so, from the shrine of Rumi, the great Sufi poet (1207-1273).

2019-06-25 · As the birthplace of Sufism and home to the whirling dervish, it astonishes me that more tourists don’t visit Konya. While it is a tad more religiously conservative than the rest of the cities in Turkey, it’s easily one of the most fascinating places I visited on the Turkey Encompassed tour. Turkey is a country with very old roots and has a culture which is becoming harder to authentically experience in the highly trafficked tourist spots. We have set up Gokpinar retreat 10 years ago for people who still desire to experience Turkey as the Turkish do; in their homes, villages, communities.
