Situated at an altitude of 1016 meters in the south central region of the vast Anatolian steppe, the city of Konya is famous far beyond the borders of Turkey. The city's renown derives from the nearby ruins of Catal Huyuk and, more so, from the shrine of Rumi, the great Sufi poet (1207-1273).

His full name is “Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi”, and in Turkey he is rather known with his first name, “Mevlana”. Mevlana was born in 1207 in Balkh, Afghanistan. His father, Bahaeddin Veled, was a distinguished teacher who, because of his great learning, had been honored with the title of Lord of Scholars.

2019-06-25 · As the birthplace of Sufism and home to the whirling dervish, it astonishes me that more tourists don’t visit Konya. While it is a tad more religiously conservative than the rest of the cities in Turkey, it’s easily one of the most fascinating places I visited on the Turkey Encompassed tour. Turkey is a country with very old roots and has a culture which is becoming harder to authentically experience in the highly trafficked tourist spots. We have set up Gokpinar retreat 10 years ago for people who still desire to experience Turkey as the Turkish do; in their homes, villages, communities.
